Becoming the winery hotel was the purpose of the hotel's owners. Hotel Viura was the first hotel designed by the Designhouses architecture studio. They wanted that “both in the conception and in the construction of Hotel Viura, the predominant guides were the idea of innovation in terms of hotel offering in the area of Rioja Alavesa and also, the idea of companion, and not intruder, of a region whose architectural heritage necessarily follows forms inseparable from the nature of the area.”
Designhouses created an avant-garde building fully integrated into the town. Built on the steep topography of a hillside that descends towards the banks of the Herrea River, next to the Church and the Plaza Mayor of Villabuena de Álava, Hotel Viura seems to be the result of a superposition of cubes thrown into the air. Each cube is a room that is attached to the limits of the plot. And on the ground floor of the hotel, the rock is integrated into the design of the hotel, serving as a wall for the reception and thermal draft.
Architecturally, different techniques and materials have been perfectly intertwined to create a disaggregated volume in which the interior spaces take center stage. Thus, the rooms, as independent rectangular volumes covered in concrete and Corten, become the silhouette of Viura, while in the highest part there is a garden terrace with imposing views of the town.
The materials used have been natural from the area and as for the tones, contrasting colors have been chosen, oxidizing the concrete in some of the modules, each one made with a different finish. The interiors have been made of exposed concrete, solid wood in the doors, bathroom countertops and tables and steel in doors and railings.
Each room is unique and its furniture has been created specifically for the hotel by brands such as Designhouses itself, Stn, Sancal, Eseri, Driade, Odile, Flex, Kallmar, Slide and Vondom. Natural tones reign, earthy, beige, purple (the references to wine are endless), wood, iron...
All Designhouses projects respond to styles such as neoplasticism, organic architecture, abstract minimalism or deconstructivism, creating dreamlike sculptures to be inhabited.
The design and construction firm Designhouses, owner of the hotel, is also responsible for the project and interior design. Hence the originality and exquisite care, down to the smallest detail, of its interiors.
This Guipuzcoan company has been designing and building different spaces with their own personality for more than twenty years.
They locate the plot themselves and design the building accordingly with a unique and special design in which they combine artisanal and detailed work with the latest advances in technology and materials, as can be perfectly seen in the Viura hotel.
This is their first foray into the hotel sector, but not the last.
The name of the Hotel has been chosen as a connection with the Rioja Alavesa wine region. Viura is a grape, also known as Macabeo. It is the most planted white grape variety in La Rioja because it is easy to grow and generous in production.
The Viura grape has been part of the wine culture in La Rioja for centuries. In the past, it was added in small quantities to red wines to enhance their acidity and freshness. This practice has now mostly disappeared. Although Viura has gained relevance as white Rioja has gained weight among wine lovers.
